SOCIAL ANXIETY | Conquer fear of judgement| Become confident
Social anxiety is probably the most common phobia there is. If you’re socially phobic you may be familiar with feeling ‘on the spot’ and what it’s like to live in fear of being embarrassed, humiliated or judged. Perhaps you’re nervous or even completely avoidant of social situations like dinner parties, interviews or even singing in the shower! From day to day, your social anxiety is probably causing you to worry about how others see you or what they think of you; you might even be one of those people who re-run events in your mind and criticise yourself harshly for things you said or did. And it wouldn’t surprise us to find out that nobody knows just how socially anxious you or, or how much it’s ruining your life and holding you back. You might be deliberately flying under the radar at work and actually under-performing, just because you of your anxiety. You may be one of those – fairly typical – anxious people who manage to be a quiet achiever at work, only to go home and ruminate, to berate yourself and brood and obsess about the interactions you’ve had with colleagues or friends that day.
Different types of Social Anxiety
There are different types of social anxiety – perhaps you’re really confident at work and more socially phobic around strangers? You might have such strong social anxiety that you have avoided going to work (or school), or that this causes you severe stress and anxiety. Conversely, you may have a role that requires a confident outward appearance and this could feel at odds with the other side to your character, possibly a side no-one really knows about, where you are full of doubt, nerves and self-criticism. This is normal for people suffering from social anxiety: it can change from day to day or between circumstances. It’s common to suffer social anxiety alongside other problems: OCD, IBS self-harm, weight issues or depression, for example. The root causes are similar, however, and these are uncovered in the Thrive Programme. By learning how your thinking styles are impacting on your behaviour and developing ways to strengthen your psychological foundations you can work to eradicate social anxiety for good.
